WATER, HYDRATION and WATER LOSS

Water, many many skincare products contain it, why are we buying skincare that contains so much?

Attractive skincare packing can lure us into the promise of super hydrated skin and all of our skincare issues answered, ingredients labels can read like a thesaurus so its no wonder we don't always have the time or the vision necessary to check them. Why can't large cosmetics labs be upfront about the truth in the water? Why do they still seem to have the power to control and influence trends to stack against truly transparent skincare? Skincare that isn't out to make money but provide pure, natural, honest and highly effective products. Mostly, it's about money, I'm here to tell you that the tide is turning and there are so many niche beauty brands that are coming clean and creating skincare free from water that is 100% natural and efficacious.

The truth about the science:

As soon as water is added to a product it begins to have a shelf life, to perish! Preservatives are added and these preservatives are usually not what your skin needs to thrive but what the product needs to be able to sit on a shelf, oh! and water as a filler is cheap.

We will never include water in our skincare for good reasons, we don't expect you to pay for water, we don't want to use the preservatives necessary and we know that excessive use of water in skincare products can create a cycle whereby you end up applying more product to balance the dryness of your skin that water can create. How? Transepidermal water loss or TEWL. I only learnt this recently and it makes so much sense, it goes like this: as we wash we apply water to our skin and if the water is warm as it usually is our pores open and more water soaks in, as we dry the water we washed with evaporates but so does any moisture in our skin. It's so simple but the aha! moments in life usually are. It really is a game changer. Water is crucial for skin health but knowing about TDW you can see that it's even more important to hydrate from the inside, when we consume enough water the body makes use of it around all the organs of the body, skin is the largest organ so we really need to make sure we drink enough all year round, I find it harder in the winter months but my body soon lets me know and I pay the price by drinking 3-4 glasses in the evening. The body also needs water to flush and support the lymphatic system, this system clears toxins from the body and skin and it's one of the bodies mini miracles.

How can we cleanse without water? Applying a light oil in place of a cleansing foam will ensure that your skin is receiving more of what it needs while the oil feeds the skin buffing it with a slightly warm damp cloth to remove excess is a great way to start. I apply one of our balms before I shower so that it acts as a barrier to the water while it cleanses and moisturises buffing with a warm damp but not wet cloth to remove any excess. Here is a link to the BALMS
