Vanilla, the therapeutic benefits of vanilla in skincare is not as well known as it's scent. These exotic pods have been made homely in kitchens and cafes, the comforting sweet smell just makes you smile on the inside, it's that vanilla bean hug. Vanilla is also known as ' little pod ' and ' black flower ' and there are compounds in the pod that make it a valuable ingredient in natural skincare.

Vanilla pods are actually the fruit of an orchid that grows in lush tropical forests, native to Mexico, Tahiti, Madagascar and other countries dotted around the south pacific, the aroma we are most familiar with comes from the pods grown in Madagascar. The worlds most popular food aroma it's no surprise that due to recent wet months in Madagascar that have prevented the natural drying of the pods the price of vanilla has skyrocketed.

IN SKINCARE:

1. Antioxidant: Vanilla essential oil contains some powerful antioxidants which can protect the skin from the damage that is caused by free radicals, free radicals are found in pollutants in the atmosphere, sun damage and are also caused by stress.  Free radicals break down collagen and cause the skin to age prematurely and appear lacklustre, regular use of antioxidant-rich skincare will protect the skin from further damage.

2. Burn treatment: Like all essential oils, vanilla essential oil should not be used on the skin undiluted, but mixed with a carrier oil, it can be used to soothe and treat minor burns and cuts. It has a natural anti-bacterial effect which will help to fight infection and help a wound to heal more quickly.
